Golden Eagles Win, Clinch Spot In CCAA Tournament

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team is headed back to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

The Golden Eagles got a spectacular first-half goal from Kimberly Surio and beat Cal Poly Pomona, 1-0, Thursday at University Field. Cal State LA (9-5-2, 5-4-2 CCAA) wrapped up the sixth and final spot in the tournament after Cal State Dominguez Hills beat Cal State San Bernardino in overtime. The Golden Eagles have 17 points and will hold the No. 6 seed and face either Chico State or Sonoma State in a first-round game on the road.

The semi-finals and finals will be held at UC San Diego.

Cal State LA will be making its sixth straight tournament appearance and its 10th overall.

The goal came in the 14th minute and was started with a determined run down the right side of the field by Irma Pinzon. She was able to elude the defense and send in a cross right in front of the goal. Surio rose up and headed the ball into the net for her second goal of the season. Pinzon picked up her first assist of the season.

Adriana Maldonado made eight saves for her eighth shutout of the season and 28th of her brilliant Cal State LA career.

Cal Poly Pomona (5-9-3, 1-7-3 CCAA) had a 16-4 advantage in shots, although Cal State LA's defense did a fine job keeping most of the shots from a distance. The Broncos also had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Meranda Salazar had a pair of shots, including one that hit the crossbar in the opening minutes of the game.

Cal State LA will conclude its regular-season on Saturday with a match against Cal State San Bernardino at 11:30 a.m. The Golden Eagles will honor seven seniors in pre-game ceremonies.
