CARSON -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to 10 games on Saturday, but the Golden Eagles were certainly hoping for an even better ending.
The Golden Eagles led 2-0, but Cal State Dominguez Hills rallied for two goals in the final six minutes and No. 8 Cal State LA had to settle for a 2-2 tie. Cal State LA (10-1-2) is 8-0-2 over its last 10 games, while Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-9-1) earned a draw in its second game with the Golden Eagles. Saturday's game was a non-conference contest; Cal State LA prevailed 5-0 in the conference meeting in Los Angeles last month.
Robin Lindahl scored in the sixth minute and
Tim Klefisch added a penalty-kick goal in the 50th minute and the Golden Eagles seemingly had things in control. Cal State Dominguez Hills, though, cut the deficit in half in the 84th minute on a goal by Robert Rooney and then tied it up with just 45 seconds remaining in regulation when JD Hauenstein scored on a rebound.
Cal State LA had a big statistical edge, but couldn't translate that into a victory. The Golden Eagles had a big 22-10 advantage in shots and a 15-2 edge in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles also had a pair of scoring attempts hit the crossbar, one by
Leonardo Nogueira in the 14th minute and the other by
Morten Bjoershol in the 51st minute.
Cal State LA took an early 1-0 lead when Lindahl got to the rebound of a shot by
David Elizaga and knocked it in for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles made it 2-0 early in the second half on Klefisch's fourth goal of the season early in the second half and kept the Toros at bay until Cal State Dominguez Hills' late rally.
Elizaga had a match-high six shots, while Klefisch and Bjoershol had four shots each. Lindahl finished with three shots.
Alexander Brems made four saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, who surrendered a goal in a game for just the fifth time this season and two goals for only the second time.
Cal State LA, which holds first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with 22 points, will return to conference action on Friday at UC San Diego.
