LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team came up on the short end of another titanic battle with UC San Diego.
The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 9 in the nation, surrendered the lone goal of the game in the 85th minute and fell to the Tritons, 1-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Triton Soccer Stadium. Cal State LA (10-2-2, 7-1-1 CCAA) lost for the first time in conference play and slipped into second place in the CCAA with 22 points. Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament with three conference games still remaining. UC San Diego (11-2-2, 5-2-2 CCAA) moved closer to the top with 17 points while remaining unbeaten at home this season.
Cal State LA had an 11-9 advantage in shots, including the first five of the game. The Golden Eagles also had all five corner kicks in the game, but were blanked for only the second time this season.
Alexander Brems made three saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while
Robin Lindahl,
David Elizaga,
Morten Bjoershol and
Leonardo Nogueira had two shots each.
The lone goal of the game came in the 85th minute when Jonathan Sabouri scored his fourth goal of the season after a steal by Brett Jones that led to a cross and a shot in at the far post.
The Golden Eagles tried for the equalizer, but got only one shot in the final five minutes, a bid from Elizaga that went wide in the 88th minute.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a road match at Cal State San Marcos.
