SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team worked overtime - and then some - to earn a huge California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory on Sunday.
Morten Bjoershol entered the game at the start of the second overtime period and, less than two minutes later, scored the game-winner to lift the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 victory over Cal State San Marcos in The Cage. No. 9 Cal State LA (11-2-2, 8-1-1 CCAA) remains in second place in the conference with 25 points, two points behind first-place Cal Poly Pomona with two matches remaining. One of those remaining matches is a showdown with the Broncos on Thursday at University Stadium.
Bjoershol, one of the top defenders in the CCAA, was inserted into the game as a forward and the move paid almost immediate dividends. A header pass from
Daniel Simonis to
David Elizaga was then sent to Bjoershol, who knocked it into the net for his second goal of the season.
It was a rewarding finish for the Golden Eagles, who were coming off a tough 1-0 loss at UC San Diego on Friday and found themselves locked in a defensive struggle with the Cougars (7-6-2, 3-5-2 CCAA) on a long Sunday afternoon. Cal State LA had an 18-10 advantage in shots heading into the second overtime period, including an 11-4 edge in the second half. Cal State LA also had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Alexander Brems made two saves in goals for the Golden Eagles and defender
Antonio Rosas also contributed with a save of his own to prevent a late scoring bid by the Cougars. Tyler Garrard made seven saves for the Cougars.
Simonis had five shots for the Golden Eagles, while Elizaga and
Leonardo Nogueira had four each.
Rosas made his clutch defensive play to deny a bid by Cal State San Marcos' Bryan Morrison in the 85th minute and help send the game into overtime.
Simonis had a shot saved in overtime by Garrard in the 95th minute and Brems made a save on a shot by Morrison in the 98th minute.
The winning goal came just 1:40 into the second overtime. Simonis and Elizaga both picked up their fifth assists of the season on Bjoershol's game-winner.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a big game against Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m.
