No. 14 Golden Eagles Rally For Another CCAA Win

ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team turned in another clutch performance Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Sonoma State.

The Golden Eagles roared back from a 2-1 deficit and outlasted the Seawolves, 18-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 15-11, in The Wolves Den. Cal State LA, ranked 14th in the nation, improved to 6-0 in five-set matches this season and won for the fifth time after trailing, 2-1, in sets. Cal State LA (17-1, 9-1 CCAA) won its fourth straight match, while Sonoma State (8-12, 4-7 CCAA) lost for only the second time at home this year.

Karla Santos had 21 kills and 10 digs to lead the Golden Eagles, who also got an amazing performance from sophomore Janessa Mata. Inserted into the starting lineup on Thursday, Mata recorded a career-high 12 kills, two aces, one block and 14 digs in a tremendous performance.

Daisia LaBrie and Daisy Crenshaw had eight kills each. LaBrie also had three blocks and hit at a .438 percentage.

Tate Battistini had a match-high 23 kills for Sonoma State and hit at a .512 percentage.

Kelsey Molnar had 40 set assists, five kills and two assists for the Golden Eagles, while Jeshmarie Suarez had a team-high 17 digs.

Cal State LA had a slim 61-60 edge in kills and both teams hit at a .244 percentage and had eight blocks. Cal State LA had seven service aces and 11 errors, while Sonoma State had three aces and 11 errors.

The Golden Eagles started slowly and dropped the first set. Cal State LA was also in danger of falling behind, 2-0, after falling into a quick 8-3 hole and trailing in the second set as late as 21-20. A kill by Alejandra Negron and an ace by Caitlyn Bato was followed by a block by Santos to give the Golden Eagles a 23-21 edge. A service error got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-22 and Santos got a kill to end it, 25-23.

After dropping the third set as well, Cal State LA responded nicely in the fourth. The Golden Eagles opened up a 16-8 advantage after an ace by Bato and took a 21-12 lead after a kill by Crenshaw. Sonoma State scored the next five points to make it 21-17 before kills by Crenshaw, LaBrie and Santos set up a set-ending kill by Molnar.

The fifth set was tight throughout and Cal State LA faced a 9-7 deficit before fighting back once again. A kill by LaBrie, an attack error, a kill by Mata and another attack error gave the Golden Eagles an 11-9 lead. After Sonoma State made it 11-10, a kill by LaBrie, a block by Mata and another attack error got the Golden Eagles to match point at 14-10. The Seawolves staved off one match point, but Santos recorded a kill on the second one to end it.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at Humboldt State.
