Golden Eagles Finally Get Some Home Cooking

LOS ANGELES -- After 11 matches away from home, Cal State LA's women's volleyball team made a triumphant return to University Gym.

Cal State LA, playing in its first home contest of the year, overcame a stern challenge from Humboldt State and posted a 25-16, 26-24, 23-25, 25-19 win in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest on Saturday night. Cal State LA (8-4, 4-0 CCAA) won its sixth straight match and remains the only CCAA South Division team unbeaten in conference play.

Karla Santos, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 13 kills, while Matanofo Keil and Sifa Faaiu had 12 kills each. Keil also hit at a .478 percentage.

Alex Lolland had 13 kills for the 'Jacks (2-10, 1-5 CCAA), while Lauren Reid had 12 kills and two blocks.

Jeshmarie Suarez had a match-high 20 digs for the Golden Eagles, while Daisia LaBrie had six kills and an ace and Daisy Crenshaw had five kills and four blocks.

Cal State LA had a 51-44 edge in kills and an 8-7 edge in blocks. The Golden Eagles had eight aces, including three from Santos.

Nicole Efseaff and Bailey Anderson combined for 34 set assists.

The Golden Eagles started well in front of the home fans and led by large margins for most of the first set.

Humboldt State was much better in the second set and staved off a pair of set points to tie it at 24-24. A service error followed by an ace by Cynthia Giron gave the second set to the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA tried to rally from a 20-15 deficit in the third set and pulled to within 24-23 before the 'Jacks closed out the set with a kill by Anita Eichenour.

The fourth set was tight early, but the Golden Eagles got hot behind a strong serving run from Santos, who served for five straight points to open up a 22-16 lead. A kill by LaBrie got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-18 and, after a block by Humboldt State's Janelle Ayala extended the match, a kill by Faaiu ended it for Cal State LA.

The Golden Eagles will have three big matches next week against South Division teams, beginning with a road match on Tuesday at UC San Diego. The Golden Eagles will host Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino next weekend, Oct. 6 and 7.
