Golden Eagles Fall For First Time In CCAA Play

LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team saw its unbeaten streak in California Collegiate Athletic Association play come to an end Tuesday night in RIMAC Arena.

The Golden Eagles dropped a hard-fought battle in the opening set and never recovered in a 26-24, 25-11, 25-14 defeat to UC San Diego in a CCAA contest. Cal State LA (8-5, 4-1 CCAA) had its six-match winning streak snapped while losing for the first time in conference play.

Daisia LaBrie had 10 kills, one ace and two blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Matanofo Keil had six kills. Karla Santos and Alejandra Negron had four kills each.

Molly Dalziel had a match-high 14 kills for the Tritons (11-3, 5-1 CCAA), while Amanda Colla had 11 kills.

Cal State LA also got 17 digs from Jeshmarie Suarez and 18 set assists from Bailey Anderson.

The Golden Eagles never could get going offensively. UC San Diego had a 42-29 edge in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .257-.056.

Cal State LA rallied impressively in the opening set, but fell just short in the end. The Golden Eagles trailed 23-18 and eventually staved off three set points beginning at 24-21. Kills by LaBrie and Santos made it 24-23 and a block by Summer Hansen and Daisy Crenshaw evened the set at 24-24. A kill by Colla and an attack error, though, gave the Tritons the first set.

UC San Diego carried the momentum from there, winning the second set 25-11 and then opening up a quick 7-0 lead in the third set. Cal State LA tried to rally, closing to within 14-10 after a kill by LaBrie. UC San Diego, though, responded by scoring the next four points and never looked back.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home match against Cal Poly Pomona.
