LOS ANGELES -- A short-handed Cal State LA's women's volleyball team put up a tremendous battle Friday night in a tight California Collegiate Athletic Association loss to Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles, after dropping the first set by a lopsided margin, extended the match to five sets with some determined play before falling to the Broncos, 25-13, 25-27, 25-20, 24-26, 15-13 in University Gym. Cal State LA (8-6, 4-2 CCAA) was without a couple key pieces, but put on quite a show before suffering their second straight loss. Cal Poly Pomona (8-8, 4-4 CCAA) won its second straight match this week to pull closer in the CCAA South Division.
Daisia LaBrie had 12 kills and six blocks to lead a balanced Cal State LA attack, while
Alejandra Negron had 12 kills and 13 digs.
Sifa Faaiu had 11 kills, 16 digs and four blocks.
Andrea Bosnic had 17 kills to lead Cal Poly Pomona, while Alexandra Gresham had 13 kills and Jenna Goldsberry had 11.
Cal State LA also got a strong performances from
Daisy Crenshaw, who had nine kills and seven blocks and
Summer Hansen, who had seven kills and six blocks.
Jeshmarie Suarez had a match-high 18 digs, while
Nicole Efseaff had 38 set assists to go along with four kills, five digs and two blocks.
Cal State LA had a 59-55 edge in kills and a 14-11 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles, though, hurt themselves at the service line, where they had 12 errors and three aces. Cal Poly Pomona had 11 aces and five errors.
The match seemed to get better the longer it went and the fifth set probably had the best volleyball of the match.
The Golden Eagles started slowly, dropping the first set and then falling behind 16-11 in the second. The Golden Eagles battled back and closed to within 20-19 after an ace by
Caitlyn Bato and eventually taking the lead at 23-22 after a block by Faaiu and Crenshaw. The Golden Eagles staved off one set point to tie it at 24-24 following a kill by Faaiu and another after a kill by Hansen tied it at 25-25. The Golden Eagles then got a block by Hansen and LaBrie and an attack error to even the match.
Cal Poly Pomona took the third set, 25-20, after scoring the final four points of the set, setting the stage for two more dramatic sets to tie the match.
Cal State LA fell behind, 23-21, but a kill by Negron and two Cal Poly Pomona attack errors made it 24-23. After Cal Poly Pomona tied it, kills by LaBrie and Negron sent the match to a fifth set.
Cal State LA took a 2-0 lead to open the fifth set after an attack error and a block by Hansen and Crenshaw and had a 4-2 advantage after a kill by Efseaff. After Cal Poly Pomona took the lead, the Golden Eagles got kills from LaBrie and Negron to tie it at 11-11. Cal Poly Pomona took a 12-11 lead after a service error and then got a key call go its way to open up a 13-11 lead. A block by Gresham and Goldsberry got the Broncos to match point at 14-11.
A kill by Negron and a Cal Poly Pomona attack error made it 14-13 before the Broncos got a final kill to end the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Cal State San Bernardino.
