Golden Eagles Unable To Overcome A Slow Start

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team had another slow start Saturday and the Golden Eagles were unable to turn things around against No. 23 Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles dropped the first set by a score of 25-15 and the Coyotes never looked back in a 25-15, 25-21, 25-20 California Collegiate Athletic Association match in University Gym. Cal State LA (8-7, 4-3 CCAA) lost its third straight match, all against opponents from the CCAA South Division.

Cal State LA was able to turn a lopsided loss in the first set on Friday into a five-set thriller against Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, but couldn't make a similar rally on Saturday against the nationally-ranked Coyotes (11-6, 7-2 CCAA).

Daisy Crenshaw had 14 kills and two blocks for Cal State LA, while Alejandra Negron had 10 kills and five digs. Daisia LaBrie had eight kills and four blocks.

Hailey Jackson led Cal State San Bernardino with 11 kills, while Lauren Nicholson had 10 kills and two blocks.

Jeshmarie Suarez had a match-high 14 digs for the Golden Eagles, while Bailey Anderson and Nicole Efseaff combined for 31 set assists. Anderson also had one of the team's four service aces.

Cal State San Bernardino had a 46-38 advantage in kills and hit at a .371 percentage while holding Cal State LA to .150. The Coyotes had a slim 6.5 - 6.0 advantage in blocks. Cal State LA served better than it did on Friday with four service aces to three errors. Cal State San Bernardino had two aces and one error.

After dropping the first set and falling behind in the second set, 17-9, the Golden Eagles stormed back into the match. A kill by Negron, an ace by Negron and a kill by Crenshaw pulled the Golden Eagles to within one point at 19-18, but that was as close as they would get. Kills by LaBrie kept the Golden Eagles close at 22-20 and 23-21, but the Coyotes won the final two points to close out the set.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early in the third set and couldn't recover. An ace by Anderson and a kill by Matanofo Keil brought the Golden Eagles to within one at 10-9, but Cal State San Bernardino scored the next four points and never looked back. Kills by Keil and LaBrie got the Golden Eagles to within 21-19, but the Coyotes scored the next three points to regain control.

Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a match at Cal State San Marcos.
