SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team found the going tough in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Cal State San Marcos.
The Golden Eagles held leads in each of the first two sets, but couldn't hold on in a 25-21, 25-20, 25-18 loss to the Cougars in The Sports Center. Cal State LA (8-8, 4-4 CCAA) lost its fourth straight match, while Cal State San Marcos (9-7, 6-2 CCAA) continued its strong play in conference action.
Alejandra Negron had eight kills and a team-high 16 kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Karla Santos had eight kills and nine digs.
Madi Anderson had 10 kills for the Cougars.
Daisia LaBrie had seven kills and three blocks and
Daisy Crenshaw had six kills and two blocks.
Bailey Anderson had 16 set assists, while
Nicole Efseaff had 14 set assists and Cal State LA's lone service ace.
Cal State LA had a 35-34 advantage in kills, but Cal State San Marcos had a 14-6 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had one service ace and eight errors.
The Golden Eagles took a 14-10 lead in the opening set after Efseaff's ace, but Cal State San Marcos scored the next six points and never trailed again. A kill by Negron evened the set at 17-17 and a kill by LaBrie kept the Golden Eagles within 19-18, but the Cougars surged at the end of the set.
Cal State LA took a quick 5-1 lead in the second set after a block by Crenshaw and Negron, but the Cougars went on a big run and took an 18-13 lead. A kill by Negron, an attack error, a kill by Crenshaw and a block by Anderson and Crenshaw got the Golden Eagles to within 18-17. A kill by Crenshaw kept the Golden Eagles within 19-18 and a kill by
Summer Hansen kept it at 21-20, but the Cougars scored the next four points to take the set.
Cal State LA fell into an early 12-5 hole in the third set and was unable to recover.
Cal State LA will return to action with their Pink Game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday. Free hot dogs and free t-shirts will be given out to Cal State LA students. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. and the match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
