LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team looked for a moment like it was going to stage another monumental comeback, only Cal State Dominguez Hills would not let history repeat itself.
The Golden Eagles, who rallied to beat the Toros in a five-set thriller in Carson in September, tried to duplicate that feat on Friday in front of a loud Cal State LA crowd, but the Toros regrouped and posted a 25-15, 25-17, 24-26, 25-19 victory in University Gym. Cal State LA (8-9, 4-5 CCAA) rallied from a 17-10 deficit in the third set and jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the fourth set before Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-10, 4-5 CCAA) was able to withstand the spirited push.
Karla Santos had 18 kills and seven digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Daisia LaBrie had 12 kills and six blocks.
Daisy Crenshaw had 10 kills and one block.
Claire Autry had 12 kills and four blocks for the Toros, while Tati Yandall had 10 kills and six blocks.
Alejandra Negron had five kills and a team-high 12 digs, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had 10 digs.
Cal State Dominguez Hills had a slim 52-50 edge in kills and a 14-7 advantage in blocks. The Toros also had the edge on the serving line, recording eight aces against five errors, while the Golden Eagles had three aces and five errors.
Cal State LA dropped the first two sets in Carson last month before storming back for a 17-25, 15-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-8 victory. On Friday, the Golden Eagles once again lost the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-17. When the Toros jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the third set, things looked bleak for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles, though, urged on by a vocal crowd that enjoyed Pink's Hot Dogs and free t-shirts before the match, willed their way back into the match. The Golden Eagles trailed, 21-17, before a kills by LaBrie and Crenshaw and back-to-back kills from Santos evened the set at 21-21. A kill by Santos and a block by
Sifa Faaiu and Crenshaw gave the Golden Eagles their first lead at 23-22 and a Cal State Dominguez Hills service error got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-23. A kill by Autry made it 24-24, but the Golden Eagles got a kill by Crenshaw and a block by Negron and LaBrie to win the set.
The Golden Eagles opened the fourth set with four straight points behind the serve of Negron and Cal State LA still led, 7-4, before the Toros scored six straight points to regain the advantage. Cal State LA took its last lead at 12-11 after a kill by Santos and an attack error, but the Toros scored the next three points and never looked back.
Cal State LA will return to action with a match at Cal State East Bay next Friday in Hayward.
