Golden Eagles Are Clutch In Tight Sweep Over Pioneers

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team used a big-time rally in the third set to complete a tight California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep over Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles rallied from a 23-18 deficit in the final set and completed a 26-24, 26-24, 26-24 victory over the Pioneers Friday night in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (9-9, 5-5 CCAA) snapped a five-match losing streak with the win over Cal State East Bay (13-7, 6-5 CCAA).

Karla Santos had 18 kills, including five late in the third set, to lead the way. Santos hit at a .395 percentage and also led the team with 19 digs. Daisia LaBrie had 11 kills and one ace and hit at a .450 percentage and Alejandra Negron had 11 kills and 13 digs. Lindsey Ray had 13 kills to lead Cal State East Bay, while Kiki Leuteneker had 10 kills.

Trailing 23-18 in the third, the Golden Eagles got a kill from Santos, an attack error by the Pioneers and two more kills from Santos to make it 23-22. Cal State East Bay got it to set point at 24-22, but a kill by Santos and an ace by Nicole Efseaff tied it at 24-24. An attack error and a kill by Santos gave the Golden Eagles the match.

Cal State LA had a 52-41 edge in kills and outhit the Pioneers, .297-.209. The Golden Eagles had a 4-3 advantage in blocks and both teams had four service aces.

Efseaff had 42 set assists, Daisy Crenshaw had eight kills and three blocks and hit at a .462 percentage and Jeshmarie Suarez had 16 digs.

As the score indicates, all three sets were extremely tight. Cal State LA was down, 23-21, in the opening set before a bad set and kills by LaBrie and Negron got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-23. After Cal State East Bay tied it at 24-24, back-to-back kills by LaBrie gave the Golden Eagles the set.

An ace by Negron gave the Golden Eagles a 21-17 lead in the second set, but the Pioneers rallied to tie it at 23-23. A kill by Santos made it 24-23 and, after the Pioneers tied it at 24-24, a service error and a kill by Negron gave the second set to the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA found itself down for most of the third set before Santos' late heroics.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday night at Cal State Monterey Bay.
