SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team completed a successful California Collegiate Athletic Association trip with a four-set win over Cal State Monterey Bay.
Karla Santos had a team-high 19 kills for the second straight night to lead the Golden Eagles to a 25-19, 25-17, 17-25, 25-18 victory over the Otters Saturday night in the Kelp Bed. Cal State LA (10-9, 6-5 CCAA) won its second straight match after posting a three-set sweep over Cal State East Bay on Friday.
Santos had 19 kills, 12 digs and two service aces to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures.
Daisy Crenshaw had 10 kills and two blocks and
Matanofo Keil had 10 kills and three blocks and hit at a .500 percentage.
Maddy Underwood had 13 kills and eight digs for Cal State Monterey Bay (11-10, 5-7 CCAA), while Amber Tygart had 10 kills and five blocks.
Daisia LaBrie had nine kills and four blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Alejandra Negron had eight kills and 13 digs.
Nicole Efseaff had 48 set assists and one ace, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had 12 digs.
Cal State LA had a 58-43 edge in kills and hit at a .230 percentage. Each team had seven blocks. The Golden Eagles had a big edge on the service line, recording eight aces and seven service errors to just one ace and eight errors for the Otters.
The Golden Eagles were even at 18-18 in the opening set before a pair of attack errors and an ace by Efseaff gave them the lead for good. After the Otters closed to within 21-19, two kills by Crenshaw, a kill by Keil and a block by Keil and Crenshaw gave the Golden Eagles the set.
Cal State LA led by just one at 11-10 in the second set before a kill by LaBrie, three straight kills by Negron and a service ace by
Cynthia Giron opened up a 16-10 advantage. The Golden Eagles still held a 22-17 advantage before a kill by Crenshaw, an ace by Santos and a kill by Keil ended the set.
After dropping the third set, Cal State LA trailed, 11-9, in the fourth set before a kill by Crenshaw, an attack error and a block by LaBrie and Keil gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Leading 14-13, the Golden Eagles scored the next six points to put the match away. Kills by Negron, Santos and LaBrie started the surge and three straight kills by Santos gave the Golden Eagles a 20-13 lead. The Otters got within 22-18, but kills by Keil and Santos and a block by Crenshaw and Keil ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home match against San Francisco State at 7 p.m.
