LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team had a real struggle on its hands Friday night before picking up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles survived 20 service errors and overcame San Francisco State, 25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 25-21 in University Gym. Cal State LA (11-9, 7-5 CCAA) won its third straight match.
Karla Santos had 17 kills and 14 digs, while
Alejandra Negron had 13 kills.
Daisy Crenshaw had 10 kills and five blocks and hit at a .444 percentage.
Drew Morris had 13 kills to lead San Francisco State (7-14, 3-10 CCAA).
Jeshmarie Suarez had 13 digs, while
Nicole Efseaff had 49 set assists, four kills in four attempts and five digs.
Cal State LA had a 59-37 advantage in kills and hit at a .218 percentage to .128 for the Gators. Both teams had six blocks. The Golden Eagles, though, had only one service ace - by Negron - and 20 service errors.
The Golden Eagles overcame a 21-20 deficit to take the opening set. A kill by Santos tied it and a kill by Negron gave the Golden Eagles a 22-21 advantage. After a service error, the Golden Eagles got consecutive kills from Negron,
Daisia LaBrie and
Matanofo Keil to take the set.
The second set was also close and Cal State LA had to survive a San Francisco State rally after leading 21-17. The Gators tied it at 22-22, but Cal State LA regained the lead after an attack error. Another attack error put the Golden Eagles ahead 24-22 and a kill by LaBrie gave the Golden Eagles the set, 25-23.
The Gators jumped out to a 20-12 lead in the third set and won handily to force a fourth frame.
Cal State LA opened up a quick 14-8 lead and had a 23-16 advantage following a block by Keil and Crenshaw. San Francisco State clawed back to within 24-21, but a kill by Crenshaw ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a match against Sonoma State at 7 p.m.
