LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team came up with a clutch performance Saturday night to keep pace in a tight California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division race.
The Golden Eagles won their fourth straight match with an exciting 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11 victory over North Division leader Sonoma State in University Gym. Cal State LA (12-9, 8-5 CCAA) remains in a fourth-place tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills in the South Division and just 1 1/2 games out of second place UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos, who are both 10-4 in conference play.
Karla Santos led a balanced Cal State LA effort with 18 kills and 22 digs.
Matanofo Keil had 15 kills and six blocks and hit at a .357 percentage, while
Daisia LaBrie had 12 kills and seven blocks.
Alejandra Negron had 12 kills and three blocks.
Amy Trephan and Calan Seitz had 11 kills each for Sonoma State (15-6, 9-4 CCAA), while Kelsey McIntire had 10.
Nicole Efseaff had 50 set assists and a pair of aces for the Golden Eagles, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had 19 digs and an ace.
Cal State LA had a 62-55 edge in kills and a 13-8 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles also served much better than they did on Friday when they committed 20 service errors in a four-set win over San Francisco State. On Saturday, Cal State LA had nine service aces and six errors. Efseaff, Santos and
Caitlyn Bato had two service aces each, while Negron,
Cynthia Giron and Suarez had one each.
After dropping the first set, Cal State LA evened the match with some solid play late in the second. The Golden Eagles trailed 19-18 before kills by Keil and Negron and a block by LaBrie and Negron gave them a 21-19 lead. A kill by Santos got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-21 and a kill by Santos ended the set.
Cal State LA then scored the final four points of the third set to take it 25-21. A kill by Negron, a block by LaBrie and Efseaff, a kill by Santos and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the frame.
Cal State LA held a 13-10 lead in the fourth set, but Sonoma State went on a 13-2 run to take control and eventually send the match to a fifth set.
Cal State LA took a 7-6 lead on an ace by Giron and never looked back. Three straight kills by Negron gave the Golden Eagles a 10-6 edge, a kill by LaBrie made it 11-6 and a block by Negron and LaBrie made it 12-6. The Seawolves pulled to within 14-11, but a kill by
Daisy Crenshaw ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action with a match at South Division leader Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.
