Golden Eagles Fall In Four Sets To Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team found some third-set heroics, but the good times didn't last in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles fought back after dropping the first two sets, but the Coyotes regrouped for a 25-22, 25-12, 22-25, 25-14 victory Friday night in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State LA (12-10, 8-6 CCAA) had a four-match winning streak snapped by the South Division-leading Coyotes (16-7, 12-3).

Alejandra Negron led the Golden Eagles with 16 kills, while Karla Santos had 11 kills and 13 digs. Daisia LaBrie had 10 kills.

Lauren Nicholson led the Coyotes with 20 kills and a .354 hitting percentage.

Nicole Efseaff had 37 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while Daisy Crenshaw had eight kills. Jeshmarie Suarez had a team-high 19 digs.

Cal State San Bernardino had a slim 52-51 edge in kills, but a more significant 9-0 advantage in blocks. The Coyotes hit at a sizzling .397 percentage to .178 for the Golden Eagles. Cal State LA had four service aces and 13 errors.

The Golden Eagles rallied from a late five-point deficit and narrowly dropped the first set. After trailing 21-16, the Golden Eagles got kills from Matanofo Keil, LaBrie and Negron to make it 21-19. An ace by Cynthia Giron got the Golden Eagles to within 22-21 and a kill by Negron made it 23-22 before the Coyotes got the final two points to take the set.

After dropping the second set, the Golden Eagles fought to stay in the match. The Golden Eagles moved out to a quick 11-6 lead following a kill by Santos, but the Coyotes tied it at 22-22 before a kill by Negron, an attack error and a kill by Negron closed out the set.

Cal State San Bernardino, though, bounced back and ended the match in four sets.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road match at Cal Poly Pomona.
