POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team let a good opportunity slip away on Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles had a 20-16 lead in the fourth set with a chance to even the match, but Cal Poly Pomona closed the contest with a 9-1 run and posted a 29-31, 25-21, 26-24, 25-21 victory. Cal State LA (12-11, 8-7 CCAA) lost its second straight match, both in four-set decisions.
Daisia LaBrie had 16 kills and three blocks, while
Daisy Crenshaw had 11 kills and five blocks and
Alejandra Negron had 11 kills, 10 digs and two aces.
Andrea Bosnic had 21 kills for Cal Poly Pomona (12-12, 8-8 CCAA).
Jeshmarie Suarez had 15 digs,
Karla Santos had nine kills and 19 digs and
Bailey Anderson had 30 set assists.
Cal State LA remains in a tie for fourth place in the South Division with Cal State Dominguez Hills with two matches remaining. The Broncos are just one-half game behind and have one contest remaining. The top four teams in the division qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.
Each team had 56 kills and Cal State LA had a 10-6 edge in blocks. The Golden Eagles had four service aces and nine errors.
The Golden Eagles took a marathon first set after staving off a pair of set points thanks to kills by Santos. A block by Crenshaw and
Matanofo Keil gave the Golden Eagles their first set point at 27-26, a kill by Santos gave the Golden Eagles a 28-27 lead and a kill by Crenshaw made it 29-28. After the Broncos tied it at 29-29, the Golden Eagles got kills from LaBrie and Keil to take the set.
After dropping the second set, the Golden Eagles rallied strongly from a 19-14 deficit in the third set and got to set point at 24-23 following a kill by Santos. The Broncos, though, scored the final three points to take the set, 26-24.
Cal State LA then jumped out to leads of 19-14 and 20-16 in the fourth set before the Broncos rallied. Cal State LA had attack errors on the final three points.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home match against UC San Diego.
