Golden Eagles Will Their Way To Win Over Cougars

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team found itself in a scoreless tie with Cal State San Marcos Friday in a key California Collegiate Athletic Association game until a spectacular play turned the tide.

Adyson Willett's amazing goal in the 73rd minute was the only scoring in a hard-fought victory for the Golden Eagles. Cal State LA (4-1-2, 2-0-1 CCAA) fought hard against a physical Cal State San Marcos (4-3, 2-1 CCAA) team that lost for the first time in three conference games.

The winning play started on a corner kick by Ashli Villalobos. After an attempted clearance, Holly Abdelkader was able to send the ball back into the box, where Willett, while on the ground, sprung up and chipped a shot into an empty net for her first goal of the season.

Willett had a strong performance for the Golden Eagles after starting and playing 46 effective minutes.

Cal State San Marcos was a threat throughout and had a 13-10 advantage in shots. The Cougars, in fact, had the first prime scoring chance of the game when Megan Pfunder's shot in the 23rd minute hit the crossbar and bounced away.

Cal State San Marcos had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks and also committed 20 fouls to just five for the Golden Eagles, who used their edge in speed to create headaches for the Cougar defense.

Paulina Chaidez, Victoria Arredondo and Tatiana Zuvic each had a pair of shots, while Adriana Maldonado made three saves for her third shutout of the season.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home game against defending conference champion UC San Diego at 11:30 a.m.
