CHICO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team got a big win to open California Collegiate Athletic Association play Friday night.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and never looked back in an impressive 25-17, 25-22, 14-25, 25-20 victory over Chico State in Acker Gym. Cal State LA (5-4, 1-0 CCAA) won its third straight match and posted a significant win over the defending CCAA North Division champions.
Karla Santos led a balanced Cal State LA attack with 17 kills and 11 digs, while
Sifa Faaiu had 15 kills and hit at a .560 percentage.
Daisia LaBrie also had a big night with 14 kills, five blocks and a .417 hitting percentage.
Bekah Boyle had a team-high 13 kills for Chico State (6-5, 0-1 CCAA). Makaela Keeve had 10 kills.
Nicole Efseaff had 51 set assists and two service aces and
Jeshmarie Suarez had a team-high 13 digs.
Daisy Crenshaw had five kills and three blocks, while
Mia Alcaraz had four kills and three blocks.
Cal State LA had a 55-51 advantage in kills and an 8-5 edge in blocks. The Golden Eagles hit at a ..328 clip to .283 for the Wildcats. Cal State LA had eight service aces and 13 errors, while Chico State had one ace and four errors.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and jumped out to an 18-12 lead in the opening set after a block by Crenshaw. After Chico State closed to within 21-17, a block by LaBrie and Santos, a block by LaBrie, a kill by LaBrie and an ace by
Cynthia Giron won the set for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA broke a 20-20 tie in the second set after a kill by Santos, an ace by Santos and a bad set made it 23-20. A kill by Faaiu got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-21 and a kill by LaBrie ended the set.
After dropping the third set, Cal State LA closed out the match in the fourth. A kill by Faaiu tied the set at 18-18 and a kill by Santos gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A kill by LaBrie made it 20-18 and a block by LaBrie and Santos made it 21-18. Chico State got to within 22-20, but a kill by Santos and back-to-back attack errors ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road match at Stanislaus State.
