Golden Eagles Rally Past Warriors In Four Sets

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team needed a strong rally to complete a tough California Collegiate Athletic Association road weekend sweep.

The Golden Eagles dropped the first set and stared at a big second-set deficit before storming back for a 23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-16 victory over Stanislaus State Saturday night in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA (6-4, 2-0 CCAA) won its fourth straight match and completed its first conference weekend with a 2-0 record. The Golden Eagles posted a four-set win over Chico State on Friday.

Daisia LaBrie had a tremendous performance on Saturday, recording a match-high 23 kills and hitting at a sizzling .514 percentage. She also had two aces and two blocks. Karla Santos had another impressive double-double with 17 kills and 17 digs, while Daisy Crenshaw had 10 kills and hit at a .444 percentage.

Rachel Klopper had 18 kills to lead Stanislaus State (0-10, 0-2 CCAA).

Cal State LA got a team-high 18 digs from Jeshmarie Suarez and 11 digs from Cynthia Giron. Bailey Anderson had 36 set assists and Alejandra Negron had seven kills, nine digs and two blocks.

Cal State LA had a 64-47 edge in kills and hit at a .267 percentage to .158 for the Warriors. Both teams had three blocks. The Golden Eagles had five service aces and eight errors, while the Warriors had three aces and five errors.

The Golden Eagles had a 21-19 lead in the opening set after a kill by Mia Alcaraz, but the Warriors scored the next five points to take control. Back-to-back kills from Sifa Faaiu got the Golden Eagles to within 24-23, but Klopper recorded a kill to give Stanislaus State the first set.

The Warriors then surged to a 14-7 lead in the second set before the Golden Eagles began their rally. Cal State LA battled back and tied it at 17-17 after a kill by Crenshaw and an attack error, but still trailed, 21-20, before a match-turning run. A kill by LaBrie tied it and a kill by Santos put the Golden Eagles ahead, 22-21. LaBrie added another kill to make it 23-21, Santos provided a kill to make it 24-21 and a kill by LaBrie evened the match.

Cal State LA opened up leads of 5-1 and 8-3 in the third set, but this time it was the Warriors who rallied, evening the set at 17-17. A kill by Crenshaw, an attack error, a kill by Faaiu and another attack error put the Golden Eagles ahead, 21-17. Stanislaus State pulled to within 21-19 before a bad set, two kills by Negron and an attack error ended the set.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to leads of 13-8 and 16-10 and led comfortably down the stretch. After Stanislaus State got to within 20-15, a kill by Negron, a kill by LaBrie and an attack error made it 23-15. A kill by LaBrie got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-16 and another kill by LaBrie ended the set.

Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday with a road match at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
