Golden Eagles See Rally Fall Short In Pomona

POMONA -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team staged a furious rally late in the second half, but ultimately fell short against the hottest team in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Golden Eagles trailed by 13 points with eight minutes to go, but were in it all the way to the end of a 67-64 loss to Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (12-12, 7-8 CCAA) used a 10-0 run to tie it with two minutes left, but Cal Poly Pomona (9-10, 7-8 CCAA) got a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:48 to go and held on for its sixth straight victory, the longest winning streak in the conference. The Golden Eagles and Broncos currently hold the final two spots for the eight-team CCAA Championship Tournament with five games remaining.

Roderick Evans-Taylor continued his strong play, scoring a game-high 23 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Travis Hammonds had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Cal Poly Pomona shot 52.1 percent (25-of-48) and made 5-of-14 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was good from the free-throw line, hitting 19-of-22, while Cal Poly Pomona was just 12-of-21. Cal Poly Pomona had a 32-31 rebounding edge, but also committed 14 turnovers to 11 for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 lead after 3-pointers from Evans-Taylor and Joshua Hopkins and a layup by Ford, but then surrendered 15 straight points and had to fight an uphill battle the rest of the way. Cal State LA trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half before 3-pointers by Hammonds and Ford pulled the Golden Eagles to within 36-30. Cal State LA trailed at halftime, 39-30.

Cal State LA faced its biggest deficit at 57-44 with 8:13 to go and still trailed by 10 points, 62-52, before scoring 10 straight points to tie the game. A pair of free throws by Grant Arthur started the run. Hammonds followed with a pair of free throws and Evans-Taylor made a steal and layup. Arthur hit two more free throws to pull the Golden Eagles to within two points and Evans-Taylor hit a pair of free throws to tie it with 2:05 remaining.

Cal Poly Pomona scored the next four points before Evans-Taylor scored on an offensive rebound to make it 64-62 with 21 seconds to go. The Broncos left the door open by making only one of two free-throw attempts, but Cal State LA was unable to get off another shot before the game ended.
