SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team found the going tough against San Francisco State Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest.
The Golden Eagles dropped their third straight game, falling to the Gators, 96-76, in The Swamp. Cal State LA (13-15, 8-11 CCAA) is still trying to clinch a spot in the eight-team CCAA Championship Tournament. The Golden Eagles are in the seventh spot, one-half game behind Cal Poly Pomona and one-half game ahead of Cal State San Bernardino and Humboldt State. Cal State LA can clinch a spot with a win in its regular-season finale or a loss by Cal State San Bernardino or Humboldt State.
Travis Hammonds and
Jordan Wilson scored 23 points each for the Golden Eagles on Saturday, while
Geoffrey Frid had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Nick Calcaterra had 23 points for San Francisco State (22-3, 15-3 CCAA), while Warren Jackson had 15 points.
Cal State LA shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) and was 16-of-38 from 3-point range. San Francisco State shot 60 percent (33-of-55) and was 12-of-25 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 6-of-10 from the free-throw line, while the Gators were 18-of-25. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 35-28, and committed 19 turnovers to 16 for the Gators.
The Golden Eagles surrendered the first 12 points of the game before Frid converted a three-point play. A 3-pointer by
Miles Ford got the Golden Eagles to within 14-6 and a 3-pointer by Wilson made it 17-11. A three-point play by
Roderick Evans-Taylor made it 32-27, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would get. A late 3-pointer by Wilson cut the halftime margin to 41-32, but San Francisco State opened the second half with a 14-3 run to take a 55-35 lead with 16 minutes remaining.
Cal State LA will conclude its regular season with a home game against Cal State San Marcos on Saturday on Senior Night.
