ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put together a tremendous defensive effort and picked up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory Friday night against Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles limited the Seawolves to just 28.2 percent shooting and recorded a 58-49 victory in The Wolves' Den. Cal State LA (14-12, 11-7 CCAA) won its third straight game and is just one-half game behind Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona for fourth place in the CCAA. The top four teams earn first-round CCAA Championship Tournament home games.
Rikke Fabricius had a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures.
Samantha Lee had 13 points and
Marina LaPuzza had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Rachael DiRegolo was a basket shy of a double-double and finished with eight points and 12 rebounds.
Carly Gill had a game-high 16 points for Sonoma State (11-12, 7-10 CCAA), while Madison Burroughs had 10 points.
Christine Delapina had five points, five rebounds and five assists for Cal State LA, while
Rebeccah DiRegolo had four points and four rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 44 percent for the game (22-of-50), but was just 3-of-13 from 3-point range with Lee hitting all three 3-pointers for the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-13 from the free-throw line. Sonoma State made just 20-of-71 field-goal attempts and was just 1-of-11 from 3-point range. The Seawolves were 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA had a 41-27 rebounding edge, although the Golden Eagles also committed 20 turnovers to just 10 for the Seawolves.
Cal State LA trailed by as many as five points in the opening quarter before closing the period on an 8-2 run. Lee hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Golden Eagles a 16-15 lead and, after two free throws by Gill, Fabricius scored inside to give Cal State LA an 18-17 lead heading into the second quarter.
Cal State LA led by as many as five points in the second quarter before settling for a 32-20 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles got a layup by LaPuzza and a 3-pointer from Lee to close out the third quarter and took a 49-38 lead entering the final period.
The Golden Eagles took a 51-40 lead after a layup by
Rachael DiRegolo with 5:30 to go and never led by less than five points the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at San Francisco State.
