ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team was unable to get the result it wanted Friday night against Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles, battling for position in a tightly-packed California Collegiate Athletic Association, were unable to slow down the red-hot Seawolves and dropped a 79-67 decision in The Wolves' Den. Cal State LA (13-14, 8-10 CCAA) lost its second straight game and stayed in a pack of teams jockeying for a spot in the eight-team CCAA Championship Tournament. The Golden Eagles remain in the sixth position, one-half game behind Cal State Dominguez Hills and one-half game ahead of Humboldt State, Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona.
Sonoma State (18-5, 14-3 CCAA) remains one-half game behind first-place UC San Diego and tied with San Francisco State.
Travis Hammonds, who exploded for 31 points last Saturday against UC San Diego, had another outstanding offensive performance with a game-high 26 points. He was 10-of-16 from from the floor and 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Hammonds just missed a double-double and had nine rebounds and four assists. The Golden Eagles also got a season-high 17 points from
Grant Arthur, who was 6-of-11 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range.
Luke Cochran had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead four Seawolves in double figures. Ronnie Harris had 17 points and six assists, Jimmy Golden had 15 points and Armani Nicolis had 13 points.
Roderick Evans-Taylor had nine points, four rebounds and three assists for Cal State LA, while
Geoffrey Frid had seven points and three rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53) and was 9-of-21 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-14 from the free-throw line. Sonoma State shot 50.9 percent (29-of-57) and 6-of-15 from 3-point range. The Seawolves were 15-of-17 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles had a tough night on the boards and were out-rebounded, 36-21. Both teams had 13 turnovers.
Cal State LA never led, but trailed by just one point, 23-22, after a 3-pointer by Arthur with five minutes left in the first half. Sonoma State, though, went on a 9-0 run to open up a 10-point lead and maintained that margin at halftime, 37-27.
The Golden Eagles fell behind by 20 points twice, the final time at 58-38 with 10 minutes to go. Cal State LA responded with an 11-2Â run highlighted by a four-point play by Arthur to make it 60-49 with eight minutes remaining and the Golden Eagles got within nine points, 67-58, after a layup by Hammonds with 3:47 to go. That was as close as Cal State LA would get, however, as Sonoma State maintained its advantage.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at San Francisco State.
