LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team had the offense working in overdrive Friday in the Golden Eagles' California Collegiate Athletic Association opener, fueled by a record-breaking performance from sophomore
Garrett Carter.
The Golden Eagles knocked down 15 attempts from 3-point range and raced to a 95-78 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night in University Gym. Cal State LA (3-1, 1-0 CCAA) shot 50.8 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles led from start to finish in an entertaining and fast-paced contest that featured a total of 27 successful 3-point attempts.
Carter, the hero of Monday's non-conference win over Dixie State, had an even better performance on Friday, going 8-of-10 from 3-point range and scoring a career-high 28 points. The eight 3-pointers set a new Cal State LA single-game record, breaking the old record of seven last done by Rodney Harris against UC Davis in 1995. Carter was 10-of-13 overall from the field and added five rebounds, three assists and three steals in a sensational all-around effort.
Jalyn Pennie also had a big game with 24 points, five rebounds and four blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Elliott Smith had 15 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Josh Kollman had 18 points for Cal State Monterey Bay (0-3, 0-1 CCAA). Gregg Polosky and Mateo Jones had 16 points each.
Devin Means had nine points for Cal State LA, while
Jihad Woods and
Khalil Williams had seven points each.
The Golden Eagles shot 58.1 percent in the first half (18-of-31) and made 10 of their 16 attempts in 3-point range while jumping out to a 54-41 halftime lead. Cal State Monterey Bay cut the deficit to nine points, 57-48, after a dunk by Polosky with 18 minutes to play, but a layup by Pennie and a three-point play by Smith pushed the lead back to 14 points and Cal State LA led by as many as 19 points down the stretch.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State East Bay at 7:30 p.m.
