Golden Eagles Come Up Short In Rematch With Toros

CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team was unable to duplicate its miracle rally against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday in the rematch between the crosstown rivals.

The Golden Eagles, who erased an eight-point deficit in the final minute of a 90-89 win in Los Angeles earlier this season, fell behind in the second quarter and never recovered in a 75-62 loss in the Torodome. Cal State LA (10-11, 7-6 CCAA) jumped out to an early 12-5 lead, but Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-13, 3-9 CCA) evened the game by the end of the first quarter and steadily built its lead over the final three periods.

Rikke Fabricius had 14 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in a row, while Christine Delapina also had 14 points. Rebeccah DiRegolo just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

Breanna Dubois had 19 points to lead three Toros in double figures, while Simon Thompson had 18 points and Dijour Ledbetter had 15 points and eight rebounds..

Marina LaPuzza had eight points and five assists, while Samantha Lee had eight points and three assists.

Cal State LA was beaten soundly on the boards, 50-34. The Golden Eagles shot 38.5 percent for the game (20-of-52) and made only 4-of-17 from 3-point range. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 40.5 percent (30-of-74) and was 6-of-20 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 18-of-25 from the free-throw line, while Cal State Dominguez Hills was 9-of-16.

The rebounding disparity gave the Toros a whopping 22 more field-goal attempts and they took full advantage.

The highlights for the Golden Eagles came early. LaPuzza hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring and Fabricius scored on a layup to give Cal State LA a quick 5-0 lead. A pair of free throws by Fabricius gave the Golden Eagles a 12-7 lead and a pair of free throws by Delapina kept the lead at 14-9. The Toros, though, closed the quarter with a 7-2 run to tie it and scored the first five points of the second quarter to take a 21-16 lead. The Golden Eagles were outscored, 24-13, in the second quarter with Delapina on the bench with three fouls.

Things got even worse for the Golden Eagles in the third quarter when the Toros promptly opened up a 14-point lead. Cal State LA trimmed the deficit to nine points, 47-38, after a layup by Rachael DiRegolo, but Delapina was then whistled for a fourth foul although, in her defense, it appeared to be an extremely questionable call. A layup by Rebeccah DiRegolo made it 54-46 late in the period and a pair of free throws by Fabricius made it 59-51 after three periods.

Cal State LA surrendered the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to trail by 18 points, 69-51 with seven minutes to go and couldn't recover.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Humboldt State.
