TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team did it the hard way Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Stanislaus State.
The Golden Eagles stormed back from a 12-point deficit in the second half and beat the Warriors, 66-59, in the Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA (8-10, 4-6 CCAA) picked up its first conference road victory thanks to a big performance down the stretch.
The Golden Eagles fell behind 50-38 in the second half and still trailed by 10 points, 53-43, with 9:52 before going on a 16-0 run that turned the game around. After the Golden Eagles completed their run with five minutes to go, they led the rest of the way.
Jordan Wilson led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 16 points. He scored the go-ahead basket with 6:44 to go and also contributed five rebounds and four assists.
Geoffrey Frid had 14 points and contributed a key block with the Golden Eagles nursing a 62-59 lead in the final minute.
Travis Hammonds had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Jordan Nelson-Brown finished with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Vondel Faniel had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Stanislaus State (5-11, 2-7 CCAA). Kaelen Mitchell had 13 points, Kyle Gouveia had 11 points and Jaelen Ragsdale had 10 points.
Garrett Carter had nine points for the Golden Eagles, including a couple of key baskets during the game-winning run.
Cal State LA held Stanislaus State scoreless for the five-minute stretch when the Golden Eagles took the lead so the defense was strong when it needed to be. The Golden Eagles, though, can also attribute the victory to taking care of the basketball. The Golden Eagles committed only five turnovers compared to 17 for the Warriors. That edge helped Cal State LA overcome a shaky rebounding performance. The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 46-26.
The Golden Eagles shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) overall and were just 8-of-29 from 3-point range. Stanislaus State shot 40 percent (24-of-60) and was just 6-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-22 from the free-throw line, while the Warriors were 5-of-8.
Cal State LA started slowly, allowing the first six points and falling into a quick 11-3 hole. Consecutive baskets by Frid, Wilson and
Miles Ford sparked a 6-0 run and got the Golden Eagles back in the game.
The Golden Eagles took their first lead at 24-23 after a layup by Wilson and a late 3-pointer by Wilson and two free throws by Frid gave Cal State LA a 31-30 halftime lead.
Cal State LA, though, started the second half slowly and the Golden Eagles found themselves staring at a 50-38 deficit before going on a 21-3 run that included the 16-0 stretch that gave them the victory. Trailing 53-43, baskets by Carter and Frid and a 3-pointer by Carter made it 53-50 with eight minutes left. Nelson-Brown brought the Golden Eagles to within 53-52 and Wilson's basket gave Cal State LA a 54-53 lead with 6:44 remaining. The run continued with a 3-pointer by Nelson-Brown and a basket by Frid made it 59-53 with 4:58 remaining.
After the Warriors cut the margin to 59-57, two free throws by Frid and one by Carter stretched the lead to 62-57. Stanislaus State scored the next basket and had possession down by just three points, but Frid blocked a shot, Wilson grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 18 seconds left. Wilson knocked down the two free throws and effectively put the game out of reach.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Cal State East Bay.
