LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's soccer team played its first game in nearly two weeks on Friday and the Golden Eagles picked up right where they left off.
The Golden Eagles picked up their fourth straight shutout and their third straight victory with a 2-0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State LA (4-2-2, 3-0 CCAA) has won its first three conference games by identical 2-0 scores.
Cal State LA was able to beat a nemesis in Cal State Monterey Bay (4-5, 1-4 CCAA), a team that beat the Golden Eagles last season in Seaside, 2-1. The Golden Eagles had a 15-8 edge in shots on Friday, including a 9-4 advantage in the first half. Cal State Monterey Bay had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Adriana Maldonado made two saves for the Golden Eagles, while Victoria Whyte made four saves for the Otters.
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the 23
rd minute when
Kimberly Mendez scored her first goal of the season with assists from
Blanca Adame and
Victoria Arredondo.
Veronika Steen also did some good work on the goal, starting the play with a pass to Adame. Adame then sent a pass into the box that was tipped by Arredondo to Mendez, who calmly put it in the net.
The Otters had one of their best chances in the 34
th minute when Madison Aguirre hit the crossbar with a shot and a rebound attempt by Ashlee Cortez went wide from close-range.
The Golden Eagles made it 2-0 in the 51
st minute and Steen once again was a big reason why. She drew a foul just outside the box and
Zarette Munoz-Aguilar drilled a shot inside the near post for her first goal of the season.
The Otters had another good look at a goal when a shot by Mariya Fefilova skimmed the top of the crossbar and stayed in play, but Maldonado was there to alertly grab it with traffic in front of the goal.
Steen had a match-high four shots, while Munoz-Aguilar and
Anahie Duran had three each.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home game against San Francisco State at 2 p.m.
