Golden Eagles Run Shutout Streak To Five With Win

LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's soccer team continued its shutout string on Sunday with an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles got a penalty kick goal by Danielle Telles in the 79th minute and made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over the Gators at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State LA (5-2-2, 4-0 CCAA) remained unbeaten and unscored upon in four conference games. The Golden Eagles are 4-0-1 over their last five games with five shutouts.

Cal State LA is one of three teams still unbeaten in conference play as the Golden Eagles, UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills are all 4-0.

Cal State LA had a 18-16 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge on corner kicks. San Francisco State had 15 fouls to 11 for the Golden Eagles, including two that came in the box and resulted in penalty kicks.

The first Cal State LA penalty kick came in the first half after Adyson Willett was dragged down in the box in the 39th minute. Anahie Duran took the attempt, but Christina Holguin made a diving save to keep the game scoreless. Kimberly Mendez was the first to the rebound, but her shot was blocked.

The second penalty kick came in the 77th minute and this time it was Duran who was fouled in the box. Senior defender Danielle Telles was successful on the attempt for her first goal of the season and Cal State LA had the only goal it would need.

The Golden Eagles did a good job surviving some San Francisco State pressure late in the match. The Gators managed only two shots after the goal, an attempt that was high by Morgan Rhym and a bid by Taylor Halstenson went wide in the 87th minute.

Duran finished with a match-high four shots for the Golden Eagles, while Willett, Telles and Victoria Arredondo had three shots each.

Holguin made four saves for San Francisco State, while Maldonado made six saves for the Golden Eagles.
