Golden Eagles Post A Big CCAA Win Over Toros

LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's soccer team whittled the number of teams still unbeaten in California Collegiate Athletic Association play down to two.

The Golden Eagles are one of those two after a 1-0 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills Wednesday night at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State LA (6-2-2, 5-0 CCAA) stretched its unbeaten streak to six with its sixth straight shutout. The Golden Eagles handed the Toros (7-3, 4-1 CCAA) its first conference loss. Cal State LA and UC San Diego are the only two teams still unbeaten in conference play.

The Golden Eagles got the only goal of the game in the 35th minute and Anahie Duran did the honors. She made a strong run into the box to the right of the Cal State Dominguez Hills goal. She eluded a first Cal State Dominguez Hills and faked out a second, who fouled her in the box. Duran took the ensuing penalty kick and knocked it in for her fourth goal of the season.

The goal came in the 35th minute and Cal State LA completed a well-played first half by smothering the Toros and allowing only two shots.

Things changed a bit in the second as Cal State Dominguez Hills took 15 shots, although most of them were from distance and low-percentage attempts. The couple that weren't, though, were stopped brilliantly by Cal State LA goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado.

Her first big save came in the 59th minute when she stopped Cal State Dominguez Hills' Ida Eriksson from point-blank shot on a shot from the right.

Her best save came in the 74th minute when she made a diving stop of a shot headed for the far corner by Jada Thomas. Maldonado made two more saves in the final two minutes on shots by Sami Feinstin and Louise Kallin, although neither was dramatic as her save on Thomas.

Cal State Dominguez Hills ended up with a 17-9 advantage in shots. Both teams had two corner kicks. Maldonado made seven saves, while Elisa Martin made four saves for the Toros.

Zarette Munoz-Aguilar had a team-high three shots for the Golden Eagles. Cal State LA got solid defensive work once again in the back from Danielle Telles, Tatiana Zuvic, Danya Hart and Blanca Adame.

Cal State LA will play its next three games away from home, beginning with a match at Chico State on Friday at 7 p.m.
