No. 13 Golden Eagles Post Big Win Over Toros

CARSON – Cal State LA's men's soccer team put forth a tremendous effort Saturday to earn a big non-conference win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles, ranked 13th in the nation, scored three first-half goals and blanked the Toros, 3-0, Saturday at the StubHub Center Field #3. Cal State LA (4-0-3) stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games and snapped a five-game winning streak by Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-2-1). Cal State LA remains one of only two teams in the West Region still unbeaten.

The match between the California Collegiate Athletic Association rivals was a non-conference game. The teams will meet again at Cal State LA in a conference match on Oct. 5.

Cal State LA struck first in the 21st minute off a corner kick. Shahin Hemat sent the ball in and Tim Kelfisch knocked in it for his second goal of the season.

Then, just about four minutes later, Hemat notched his first goal of the season when he got a beautiful pass from Steven Eberle and beat the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

Ihsan Kalkan made it 3-0 in the 43rd minute when he converted a penalty kick.

The defensive effort on Saturday was inspired as Cal State LA recorded its second straight shutout. Steven Barrera was in goal and got his second shutout of the season without recording a save.

Cal State LA had a 12-10 advantage in shots, while Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Chase Gentry made six saves in goal for the Toros.

Klefisch had a big match for the Golden Eagles and led everyone with four shots, all of them on goal. Hemat added three shots, two of which were on goal.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home conference match against Cal State Monterey Bay.
