LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's soccer team got a much-needed boost in the second half of its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles got second-half goals from Marie Lou Larose and
Anahie Duran and goalkeeper
Adriana Maldonado and the Cal State LA defense stood tall in a 2-0 win Friday night at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State LA (2-2-2, 1-0 CCAA) limited Cal State East Bay (1-3-2, 0-1 CCAA) to just four shots in the game.
Cal State LA had a 9-4 edge in shots in the game, while Cal State East Bay had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Maldonado made two saves for Cal State LA, while Jasmine Corbett made three saves for Cal State East Bay.
After a scoreless first half, Cal State LA struck early in the second period.
Victoria Arredondo, who leads the team in scoring with three goals, had the assist this time. She made a strong run into the box down the right side and sent in a pass to Larose, who collected the pass and sent a perfectly-placed shot just inside the far post for her first goal of the season. Arredondo picked up her first assist of the season.
Cal State LA made it 2-0 in the 79
th minute with
Anahie Duran scoring her second goal of the season.
Danya Hart set the play up with a brilliant run and a nice pass to Duran, who eluded the goalkeeper and shot to the far post to make it 2-0.
Cal State LA's defense took it from there. The Golden Eagle backline of Hart,
Blanca Adame,
Danielle Telles and
Micaela Estrada helped Cal State LA post its third shutout of the season.
Veronika Steen and Larose had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Stanislaus State beginning at 2 p.m.
