LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's soccer team saved its scoring punch for the second half for a second straight game.
The Golden Eagles scored a pair of second-half goals and beat Stanislaus State, 2-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game Sunday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State LA (3-2-2, 2-0 CCAA) recorded its third straight shutout and won both conference games this weekend by scores of 2-0.
Cal State LA and Stanislaus State (5-2, 0-2 CCAA) battled through a scoreless first half, but the Golden Eagles took the lead in the 63
rd minute on a goal by
Victoria Arredondo and got a second goal in the 73
rd minute from
Anahie Duran.
Adriana Maldonado had a strong game on goal and made four saves for the team's fourth shutout of the season and third this week. Stanislaus State goalkeeper Haley Crook also had four shots.
Cal State LA had a 12-8 advantage in shots, while Stanislaus State had a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles had a big edge in possession in the first half, but Stanislaus State did a great job of defending and limiting Cal State LA shots. The Golden Eagles ended the first half with a 4-2 advantage in shots.
Stanislaus State appeared to be gaining some momentum to start the second half and had its best scoring chance when Gabriela Vargas hit a shot that Maldonado needed to make a diving save to keep out of the net in the 55
th minute. Stanislaus State had another outstanding chance, a shot from in close by Jade Poon go just wide in the 61
st minute, and, two minutes later, Cal State LA struck for its first goal.
Arredondo did the scoring honors with her team-high fourth goal of the season.
Zarette Munoz-Aguilar sent a perfectly-placed pass to an onrushing Arredondo, who beat the defender to the ball and then, with the goalkeeper out, sent a shot inside the far post in the 63
rd minute.
Cal State LA made it 2-0 in the 73
rd minute when
Anahie Duran scored her third goal of the season. Marie Lou Larose was able to control the ball on a strong run and send a pass in the middle to Duran, who accepted the pass and shot to the far post.
Maldonado made another save on Stanislaus State's Mayah Chambers in the 82
nd minute after a corner kick and the Golden Eagle defense held the Warriors without another shot down the stretch.
Duran and
Veronika Steen had three shots each for the Golden Eagles, while Arredondo and Munoz-Aguilar had two each.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday, Sept. 30 with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
