Golden Eagles Win CCAA Opener At San Marcos

SAN MARCOS – Cal State LA's women's volleyball team came up with a big performance to post a victory in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener.
 
The Golden Eagles split the first two sets, but played solidly in the final two of a 25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19 win over Cal State San Marcos Friday in The Sports Center. Cal State LA (5-4, 1-0 CCAA) has played its first nine matches away from home.
 
Alma Serna had 14 kills, six blocks and seven digs to lead the Golden Eagles. Lauren Gomez added 10 kills and nine digs. Kelsey Molnar had 21 set assists, two aces, 10 digs and two blocks, while JamieAnn Bero had eight kills and five blocks.
 
Madi Anderson led Cal State San Marcos (6-3, 0-1 CCAA) with 12 kills and 13 digs. Lauren Lee and Brooke Butler had 10 kills each.
 
Cynthia Giron had 20 digs, four assists and one ace and Chloe Clancy had 13 digs and one ace.
 
Both teams had 47 kills in the match, while Cal State LA had a slim 12-10 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles had seven aces and seven service errors, while the Cougars had six aces and eight errors.
 
Cal State LA jumped out to a quick 13-7 lead in the opening set and never looked back. Cal State San Marcos got as close as 22-19, but a kill by Molnar and two errors by the Cougars ended the set.
 
The Golden Eagles trailed in the second set, 24-18, before rallying behind Giron's serve. Cal State LA got as close as 24-23 before a kill by Anderson evened the match.
 
Cal State LA took the lead in the third set with some clutch play late. The set was tied at 19-19, but the Golden Eagles got a block by Mia Alcaraz and Molnar and a Cal State San Marcos attack error to take the lead for good. After the Cougars made it 21-20, the Golden Eagles got two straight kills by Bero, an ace from Giron and another kill by Bero to close out the set.
 
Cal State LA took a 17-11 lead in the fourth set and kept a comfortable advantage the rest of the way. A kill by Bero, a bad set by the Cougars and a kill by Serna got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-18. A Cal State San Marcos serving error ended the match.
 
Cal State LA will play its 10th straight match away from home on Saturday night at UC San Diego. The Golden Eagles will play their home opener next Friday, Sept. 23, against Cal Poly Pomona.
