LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's volleyball team completed its season-opening 10-match roadtrip with a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at UC San Diego.
The Golden Eagles, who will play their first home match of the season next Friday, fell in four sets to the Tritons, 25-16, 15-25, 25-14, 25-22 in RIMAC Arena. Cal State LA (5-5, 1-1 CCAA) settled for a split in its first weekend of conference competition. The Golden Eagles opened conference play with a win at Cal State San Marcos on Friday.
UC San Diego (5-5, 2-0 CCAA) opened conference play with home wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State LA.
Alma Serna had 17 kills and five blocks for Cal State LA, while
JamieAnn Bero had 10 kills.
Kelsey Molnar had 33 set assists and two service aces.
Meagan Wright had 16 kills for UC San Diego, while Amanda Colla had 10 kills and 14 digs.
Lauren Gomez had five kills, four aces and 11 digs for Cal State LA, while
Cynthia Giron had a team-high 19 digs.
UC San Diego had a 55-40 advantage in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .218 to .154. Cal State LA had nine service aces and six errors, while the Tritons had six aces and four errors. Cal State LA had a 9-6 advantage in blocks.
The first three sets were all decided by lopsided margins with UC San Diego taking two of the three. The Golden Eagles fell behind early and never threatened in the first set, but bounced back strongly in the second. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 13-2 lead after a kill by
Sifa Faaiu and never looked back. A block by
Taylor Kushner and Bero got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-14 and a kill by Bero gave Cal State LA the set and evened the match.
Cal State LA, though, was unable to keep that momentum in the third set. UC San Diego went on a 9-0 run to stretch a 12-7 advantage to a 21-7 lead and took the third set.
The fourth set was the only close one of the match. Cal State LA trailed early, 13-8, but battled back to tie it at 16-16 following an ace by Serna, at 17-17 after a kill by Bero, at 18-18 after a block by Bero, at 19-19 following a UC San Diego error and at 20-20 after a kill by Serna. Another kill by Serna gave the Golden Eagles a 21-20 lead, but UC San Diego scored the next three points and never trailed again.
Cal State LA will play its first home match on Friday against Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m.
