Golden Eagles Fall Short Against Azusa Pacific

AZUSA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team found the going tough at Azusa Pacific Saturday night.

The Golden Eagles were stunned by a second-half blitz and fell to the Cougars, 5-1, at Cougar Soccer Complex. Cal State LA (1-2-1) lost for the second time in three games, while Azusa Pacific (2-1-1) won its second straight contest.

Cal State LA was in decent position at halftime, trailing by just a 1-0 count. Azusa Pacific, though, scored three times in a six-minute span early in the second half to wrest control of the game.

Cal State LA finally generated some pressure that resulted in an Azusa Pacific foul in the box and Anahie Duran converted the penalty kick for her first goal of the season. Azusa Pacific, though, responded with a goal five minutes later and restored its four-goal margin.

Adriana Maldonado made six saves for the Golden Eagles, who were outshot, 16-3. Cal State LA was outshot, 6-1, in the first half and by a 10-2 margin in the second half.

Cal State LA got the first shot of the game on a Duran attempt after a corner kick by Veronika Steen in the opening minute of the game. It was Azusa Pacific, though, that got on the scoreboard first when Cara Scammon headed in a cross from Kelsey Bushman in the 12th minute.

That was the only scoring in the first half, but Azusa Pacific started its second-half blitz in the 60th minute when Mallory Walton scored to make it 2-0. Kennedy Christie made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute with an assist from Allyn Brown and Emile Alum made it 4-0 when she headed in a corner kick from Hayley Arft in the 66th minute.

Duran made it 4-1 with her penalty kick goal, but Tami Brinkman made it 5-1 when she knocked in a cross from Arft.

Cal State LA had a final bid, but a shot by Jennifer Torres was saved in the 87th minute by Zoey Bauman.

Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Point Loma on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
