Golden Eagles Battle To 0-0 Tie With Sea Lions

LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's soccer team finished its non-conference schedule with a fast-paced tie against a talented Point Loma squad.

The Golden Eagles and Sea Lions were outstanding defensively in a 0-0 tie at Jesse Owens Track on Tuesday. It was a welcome defensive effort for Cal State LA (1-2-2), which was coming off an uncharacteristic 5-1 defeat at Azusa Pacific on Saturday. Point Loma (2-1-2) was coming off a 5-0 win over Southern Nazarene.

It was the second 0-0 tie of the season for the Golden Eagles, while Point Loma recorded its third shutout of the season and second in a row.

Point Loma had a 14-8 advantage in shots, including a 10-4 edge in the second half, but the defenses made sure the majority of the attempts were not dangerous. Point Loma also had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

Cal State LA goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado made six saves, while Point Loma goalkeeper Ariel Oriarte made three saves.

Neither team came close to scoring in the first half, but each goalkeeper came up huge in the second half with brilliant diving saves.

The first big scoring chance of the game came early in the second half when Cal State LA's Zarette Munoz-Aguilar struck a left-footed shot that struck the far post and bounced away in the 52nd minute.

The next two outstanding chances required tremendous saves by Maldonado and Oriarte.

Maldonado went first and she made a diving, fingertip deflection to send a shot by Point Loma's Abbey Teagle just wide of the goal in the 60th minute. The play resulted in a corner kick, but Cal State LA defended it well and kept the game scoreless.

Oriarte made a game-saving stop in the final minute of regulation. Cal State LA's Jennifer Torres sent a blistering shot toward the near post from just outside the penalty box, but Oriarte made a diving stop to send the game into overtime.

Teagle had a shot blocked for a corner kick early in the first overtime, but Cal State LA once again played solid defense and kept the Sea Lions from getting another attempt.

The Golden Eagles had some promising runs in the overtime periods, but Oriarte was active in the goal area and prevented any dangerous shots.

The only shot of the second overtime came after a Cal State LA foul. Madison Valenzuela's shot from long-range was grabbed by Maldonado with less than one minute remaining.

Cal State LA will begin California Collegiate Athletic Association competition on Friday with a home game against Cal State East Bay beginning at 7 p.m.
