Golden Eagles Settle For A Saturday Split

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's volleyball team had mixed results Saturday in the final day of the D2 West Region Challenge.

The Golden Eagles started the day with a three-set sweep over Fresno Pacific, but then saw the tables turned on them in the nightcap as Simon Fraser posted a three-set sweep. The three-day tourney was hosted by San Francisco State.

Cal State LA (4-4) finished the tourney with a 3-1 record after posting wins over Chaminade, Concordia of Portland and Fresno Pacific.

The Golden Eagles started the day with a 25-20, 25-22, 25-20 win over Fresno Pacific. Alma Serna had an outstanding match, recording 14 kills and hitting at a .480 percentage. Serna also had six blocks and eight digs. Lauren Gomez had nine kills, four aces and two blocks, while Mia Alcaraz had three kills and six blocks.

Cal State LA had a 40-36 advantage in kills and hit at a .233 percentage to just .100 for Fresno Pacific. The Golden Eagles also served well with eight aces and four errors. Gomez had four aces, while Kelsey Molnar had three.

Molnar also had 32 set assists, while Cynthia Giron had 12 digs.

The Golden Eagles rallied nicely from a 15-10 deficit in the opening set and tied the match for the first time at 16-16 after a block by Serna and Gomez. A kill by Erie Williams started the run. An ace by Gomez made it 22-21 and a kill by JamieAnn Bero made it 23-21. Another ace by Gomez got the Golden Eagles to set point and an attack error ended the frame.

Cal State LA jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set and never looked back. After Fresno Pacific closed to within 19-17, kills by Serna and Williams made it 21-17. Another kill by Serna and a pair of Fresno Pacific errors ended the match.

Cal State LA was unable to get untracked in the evening match against Simon Fraser and fell, 25-20, 25-15, 25-17. Bero had eight kills and two aces, Serna had five kills and two blocks, Molnar had 18 set assists and 11 digs and Giron had 11 digs.

Devon May led Simon Fraser (7-1) with 12 kills.

Simon Fraser had a 42-25 advantage in kills and limited the Golden Eagles to just .026 hitting. Cal State LA had 25 kills and 22 attack errors.

The Golden Eagles had five aces, two each by Bero and Molnar and one by Nicole Efseaff.

Cal State LA will begin California Collegiate Athletic Association play next Friday at Cal State San Marcos.
