Golden Eagles Lose In Overtime At East Bay

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had even more heartbreak on Saturday as the Golden Eagles lost in overtime for a second straight night.

The Golden Eagles gave conference-leading Cal State East Bay all it could handle before running out of steam in the overtime period and falling, 81-69, in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (8-16, 6-12 CCAA) missed out on a chance to retake sole possession of eighth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and instead remain tied with San Francisco State. Chico State is also in the mix for the final conference tournament spot, sitting just one game back of the Golden Eagles and Gators.

The Golden Eagles battled back from a 10-point, third-quarter deficit and appeared to be in position to win the game, but Cal State East Bay benefitted from a key no-call at the end of regulation and then outscored Cal State LA, 16-4, in the overtime. The Pioneers (23-4, 17-2 CCAA) lead the CCAA by one-half game over Cal State Dominguez Hills and UC San Diego.

Bree Parsons scored 21 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while Rikke Fabricius had 15 points and four rebounds. Franeka Hall had 10 points, four rebounds and two steals, while Kiah Knox had seven points and eight rebounds.

Laci Effenberger had a game-high 25 points to lead the Pioneers, while Shannon Bland had 22 points, six rebounds and five assists. Tori Breshers had nine points and 10 rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57), while Cal State East Bay shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59). The Golden Eagles, though, were just 3-of-17 from 3-point range, while the Pioneers were 11-of-32. Cal State LA was 18-of-24 from the free-throw line, while Cal State East Bay was 22-of-35. The Pioneers had a 35-34 rebounding edge, while the Golden Eagles had more turnovers, 18-16.

For the second straight evening, the Golden Eagles battled back from a second-half deficit to put themselves in position to win. Cal State LA fell in overtime to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night.

On Saturday, the Golden Eagles trailed, 42-32, early in the third quarter before going on a 12-0 run that culminated with a 3-pointer by Ali Orlich that gave Cal State LA a 44-42 lead. Cal State East Bay regained the lead and a late free throw by Hall pulled the Golden Eagles to within 50-49 after three quarters.

The Golden Eagles then allowed the first five points of the fourth quarter to fall behind 55-49 before rallying again. A layup by Christine Delapina tied it at 58-58 and a 3-pointer by Hall gave the Golden Eagles a 61-58 lead. Hall hit one of two free throws moments later to give Cal State LA a 62-58 lead. The Otters got back-to-back 3-pointers by Effenberger to retake the lead before Parsons hit a jumper to give the Golden Eagles a 65-64 lead. Breshers hit one free throw with 30 seconds left to tie it, but missed the second and the Golden Eagles got the rebound with a chance to win.

Hall drove in for a layup with time winding down and appeared to be fouled, but no call was made, Breshers was credited with a block and the game headed into overtime.

The Pioneers then scored the first four points of overtime and never looked back. Cal State LA was just 1-of-9 from the floor in the extra period and the Pioneers hit six free throws in the waning moments to extend the final margin of victory.

Cal State LA will return home for its final two games, beginning with a game against Cal State Stanislaus on Thursday.
