LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team took a huge step forward Thursday in its quest for a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.
The Golden Eagles forced 34 Stanislaus State turnovers and posted a 76-59 victory over the Warriors in the Eagles Nest. Cal State LA (9-16, 7-12 CCAA) takes over sole possession of eighth place in the conference and moved to within one game of Cal Poly Pomona. The Golden Eagles are now one-half game ahead of San Francisco State and can clinch a spot with either a loss by San Francisco State in either of its last two games or a win over Chico State on Saturday.
The top eight teams qualify for the conference tournament.
Franeka Hall led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 18 points and seven rebounds. She also had nine steals, which was just one off the program single-game record.
Christine Delapina had 17 points and was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line and
Rikke Fabricius had 12 points and five rebounds.
Alysa Valentine had 19 points for Stanislaus State (16-9, 12-7 CCAA), which is still battling for a first-round home game on Tuesday.
Cal State LA forced the 34 turnovers with 29 steals, which is a new program record. The Golden Eagles took command of the game in the second quarter, fought off a stern fourth-quarter challenge by the Warriors and then pulled away down the stretch with some clutch free-throw shooting.
Cal State LA shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) while Stanislaus State shot 35.8 percent (19-of-53). The Golden Eagles were 5-of-17 from 3-point range, while the Warriors were 8-of-21. The Golden Eagles were 29-of-33 from the free-throw line, including 24-of-28 in the second half. The Warriors were 13-of-17.
Stanislaus State had a 39-35 rebounding edge, while the Golden Eagles won the turnover battle against the Warriors' full-court press, committing 24 turnovers to 34 for the Warriors.
The Golden Eagles fell into a quick 7-0 hole due to the Warriors' press, but then got back on track with an 8-0 run to take the lead. The Golden Eagles took a 17-9 lead when
Samantha Lee hit a pair of free throws after Hall was fouled hard on a layup attempt and had to leave the game. The Golden Eagles settled for a 17-15 lead after one period.
Cal State LA took control of the game in the second quarter by outscoring the Warriors, 19-7. A 3-pointer by
Ali Orlich and a layup by Hall gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead of the game, 27-16 and a 3-pointer by
Sami Oliver gave the Golden Eagles a 36-22 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles took 16-point leads twice in the third quarter, the final time after two free throws by Delapina made it 47-31. Cal State LA took a 48-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
Cal State LA then had to weather a major push by the Warriors, who pulled to within 58-55 with five minutes to play after a 3-pointer by Rean Hardin. After the Warriors made it 60-57 with 3:41 to play, the Golden Eagles went on a 14-0 run to put the game away. Fabricius hit four straight free throws to start the run, Hall scored on a layup, Fabricius and Orlich scored on layups and Delapina hit a jumper in the lane before knocking down two more free throws to make it 74-57 with one minute left.
Cal State LA will conclude the regular-season with a home game against Chico State on Saturday and it will be Senior Night. The Golden Eagles will honor seniors
