SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team struggled offensively Saturday and dropped its second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association game.
The Golden Eagles made only six of 31 attempts from 3-point range and fell to Cal State San Marcos, 77-68, in The Sports Center. Cal State LA (7-7, 4-2 CCAA) started the week as one of two unbeaten teams remaining in conference play, but tumbled into a third-place tie after its second straight loss. Cal State San Marcos (7-4, 4-2 CCAA) moved into the tie for third after limiting Cal State LA to just 38.2 percent shooting.
Rachael DiRegolo had a season-high 16 points to lead four Cal State LA players in double figures.
Samantha Lee had 14 points, 12 of them coming on four 3-pointers,
Rikke Fabricius had 12 points and
Mackenzie Barnes had 10 points. Savannah Camp had a game-high 29 points to lead Cal State San Marcos, while Raegan Lillie had 15 points and Dee Armenta had 11 points for the Cougars.
Da'Jah Jackson had nine points for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA was 26-of-68 from the floor (38.2 percent) and just 6-of-31 from 3-point range (19.4 percent). Cal State San Marcos was 27-of-60 (45 percent) overall and a much more efficient 8-of-17 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 10-of-14 from the free-throw line, while Cal State San Marcos was 15-of-19. Cal State San Marcos had a 36-32 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA forced 28 turnovers and committed 24.
Cal State LA started well and took a 6-2 lead after a pair of baskets by DiRegolo and a layup by Jackson following a
Marina LaPuzza steal. Cal State LA still held a 7-5 lead after a free throw by Fabricius, but Cal State San Marcos went on an 8-0 run before a 3-pointer by Barnes and a basket by Barnes pulled the Golden Eagles to within 13-12. The Golden Eagles trailed, 15-12, after one quarter.
Barnes hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 15-15 early in the second quarter and a layup by Jackson tied it at 24-24, but Cal State San Marcos closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a 33-26 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles opened the third quarter with a basket by DiRegolo to make it 33-28 and two free throws by Barnes kept it at 37-32. A 3-pointer by Lee made it 41-35, but the Cougars closed the third quarter strongly to take a 55-43 entering the fourth quarter.
Cal State LA got a 3-pointer by Lee, a basket by DiRegolo and a three-point play by Fabricius to open the fourth quarter and closed to within 55-51 and a 3-pointer by Lee pulled the Golden Eagles to within three points, 58-55, with 6:29 to go. Cal State San Marcos, though, responded with a 12-0 run to take its biggest lead, 70-55. A layup by
Karina Moreno stopped the run and a 3-pointer by
Christine Delapina made it 73-63 with 2:18 to go and a pair of free throws by Fabricius made it 73-65 with 1:13 to go, but Cal State LA couldn't get any closer.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against San Francisco State on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 5:30 p.m.
