LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's basketball team made their return back home a successful one.
The Golden Eagles bounced back from their first two California Collegiate Athletic Association losses last week with an efficient 68-57 win over San Francisco State Thursday night in University Gym. Cal State LA (8-7, 5-2 CCAA) remains in a three-way tie for third place in the conference along with Cal State East Bay and Cal Poly Pomona, one game back of first-place UC San Diego.
Cal State LA, after a tight first quarter, opened up a 36-26 lead by halftime and held off charges by San Francisco State (2-11, 0-6 CCAA) in the second half. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 18 points early in the fourth quarter and held on strongly for the victory.
Da'Jah Jackson had a team-high 24 points and five assists for Cal State LA, while
Christine Delapina had 13 points, five rebounds and two assists and
Mackenzie Barnes had a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double.
Donae Moguel scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for San Francisco State.
Samantha Lee had eight points, one rebound, one assist and one steal for Cal State LA, while
Marina LaPuzza had six points and eight rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 43.1 percent for the game (25-of-58) and made 6-of-21 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 12-of-18 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State was 21-of-58 overall (36.2 percent) and made 5-of-15 from 3-point range. The Gators were 10-of-16 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles scored the first six points of the game and never looked back. Barnes opened the game with a layup and then hit a jumper and Jackson scored on a fastbreak layup with an assist from LaPuzza. The Golden Eagles never led by more than six points in the first period and held a 14-12 lead after one quarter.
Cal State LA opened the second quarter with baskets by
Rachael DiRegolo, Delapina and Barnes to take a 20-12 advantage and took their first 10-point lead of the game following a pair of free throws by Delapina. A pair of free throws in the final minute of the quarter by Jackson gave the Golden Eagles a 36-26 lead.
Jackson hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the third quarter and Cal State LA opened up a 53-37 lead after a basket by
Kassie Krueger before settling for a 53-38 lead after three quarters.
A layup by LaPuzza gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 58-40, with 7:31 remaining and a 3-pointer by Delapina kept the advantage at 66-48 with four minutes to play.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona.
