LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's basketball team fought through some adversity Saturday night in its California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles trailed for most of Saturday's game before putting together a fourth-quarter rally in a 63-56 victory over the Seawolves. Cal State LA (5-3, 2-0 CCAA) scored 11 straight points in a late fourth-quarter run to break a 51-51 tie.
Rikke Fabricius had 20 points and eight rebounds for Cal State LA, while
Samantha Lee had 11 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good.
Da'Jah Jackson added 11 points, five rebounds and six assists.
Madison Burroughs had 19 points for Sonoma State (4-2, 0-1 CCAA), which was playing in its conference opener. Kim Savio added nine points and seven rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) for the game and made 6-of-21 from 3-point range. Sonoma State shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) and made only 2-of-8 from behind the arc. Cal State LA was 13-of-21 from the free-throw line and Sonoma State was 10-of-14.
Cal State LA had a 35-34 rebounding edge and committed 13 turnovers to 14 for the Seawolves.
Christine Delapina had seven points, four assists and three steals for Cal State LA, while
Mackenzie Barnes had eight points and five rebounds.
Alma Serna had seven rebounds and three blocks to go along with two points.
Cal State LA, which was coming off a win over Humboldt State on Friday in its conference opener, trailed by as many as six points early in the first quarter, but a 3-pointer by Jackson cut the deficit to 17-15 entering the second period.
Sonoma State then built leads as large as eight points in the second quarter, but a layup by Serna tied it at 26-26 before Savio hit a jumper to give Sonoma State a 28-26 halftime lead.
Back-to-back baskets by Delapina and
Marina LaPuzza gave the Golden Eagles their first lead at 30-28 early in the third quarter, but Sonoma State opened up a four-point lead late in the period before Fabricius made two free throws to make it 46-44 entering the fourth quarter.
Cal State LA trailed by four points early in the fourth quarter, but a 3-pointer by Delapina and a basket by Barnes gave the Golden Eagles a 51-50 lead with 7:12 to go. After a free throw by Savio tied it, Lee hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with five minutes to go and another with 2:57 remaining to give the Golden Eagles a 57-51 lead. Fabricius followed with a three-point play and then made two free throws to give the Golden Eagles a 62-51 lead with 1:53 remaining.
Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday with a non-conference game at Seattle Pacific.
