LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's basketball team got its California Collegiate Athletic Association season off to a good start Friday with an impressive win over Humboldt State.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to leads as large as 23 points and held on for a 76-68 win over the 'Jacks in front of an enthusiastic crowd in University Gym. Cal State LA (4-3, 1-0 CCAA) entered the fourth quarter with a 61-39 lead and then kept Humboldt State at bay for the final 10 minutes.
Da'Jah Jackson had a game-high 20 points, four rebounds and five assists to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures.
Rikke Fabricius had 18 points and five rebounds and
Samantha Lee had a career-high 17 points, 15 of which came on five 3-pointers.
Tyra Turner had 14 points and nine rebounds and Kindall Murie had 13 points, four rebounds and three assists for Humboldt State (1-7, 0-2 CCAA). Lynnzy Troxell had 11 points and five rebounds.
Christine Delapina had seven points, five assists and four steals for Cal State LA, while
Mackenzie Barnes had seven points and four rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 46.2 percent for the game (24-of-52) and made 10-of-20 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were especially effective in the first half when they made 8-of-12 from behind the arc. Humboldt State shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56) and was 7-of-19 from behind the arc.
Humboldt State had a big 42-24 rebounding edge, but Cal State LA committed only nine turnovers while forcing 17 by the 'Jacks.
Rachael DiRegolo scored the opening basket of the game and after Humboldt State tied it at 2-2, the Golden Eagles scored the next 10 points to take the lead for good. Jackson hit a 3-pointer to start the run, Delapina added a basket, Fabricius converted a three-point play and
Marina LaPuzza made a layup to give the Golden Eagles a 12-2 lead. A 3-pointer by Lee gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the first quarter, 23-12, and Cal State LA settled for a 25-19 lead at the end of the period.
The Golden Eagles broke the game open in the second quarter with a 14-0 run that extended a 26-21 advantage to 40-21. Jackson accounted for 11 straight points to start the surge and Lee finished it with a 3-pointer. A pair of free throws by Jackson made it 42-26 at halftime.
A pair of free throws by Delapina gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 51-28, midway through the third quarter and a 3-pointer by Lee gave the Golden Eagles a 61-39 lead entering the final quarter.
Humboldt State, after managing only 20 points in the second and third quarters combined, erupted for 29 fourth-quarter points, but Cal State LA didn't let the margin dip below double digits until the final minute of play.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Sonoma State.
