HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team unleashed a furious rally Monday in its California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Cal State East Bay only to see it fall painfully short of a victory.
The Golden Eagles wiped out all of a 20-point second-half deficit only to see the Pioneers sink a pair of free throws with one second remaining for an 86-84 win in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (6-6, 2-2 CCAA) got 3-pointers in the final minute from
Devin Means and
Travis Hammonds to tie the game at 84-84, but the Pioneers got the game-winning free throws at the end.
Hammonds finished with a game-high 20 points to lead five Golden Eagles in double figures.
Geoffrey Frid had 12 points and three rebounds,
Jordan Wilson had 11 points and two rebounds,
Jordan Nelson-Brown had 11 points, three assists and four steals and
Garrett Carter had 11 points.
Juwan Anderson and Micah Dunhour had 17 points to lead Cal State East Bay (9-2, 3-1 CCAA). The Pioneers also had five players reach double figures in scoring.
Both teams were outstanding on offense. Cal State LA shot 60.8 percent for the game (31-of-51), while Cal State East Bay shot 52.8 percent (28-of-53). The Golden Eagles were just 6-of-18 from 3-point range, though, while the Pioneers were 13-of-25. In the second half, the Golden Eagles made 18-of-29 field-goal attempts (62.1 percent) and the Pioneers were 13-of-23, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range.
Cal State LA was 16-of-20 from the free-throw line, while Cal State East Bay was 17-of-22. Cal State LA was outrebounded, 27-25, but committed 15 turnovers to 19 for Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles led briefly early in the game, but soon found themselves fighting an uphill battle. A layup by Nelson-Brown kept the Golden Eagles within one point at 28-27, and a free throw by Frid kept it at 30-28. Cal State East Bay, though, went on a 12-0 run to take a 42-28 lead before a pair of free throws by Frid and two baskets by Carter kept the Golden Eagles within 10 points, 44-34, at halftime.
Cal State LA fell behind by 20 points, 67-47, with 14 minutes to go, but the Golden Eagles battled their way back into the contest. The Golden Eagles still trailed by 13 points, 84-71, with 4:35 to go, but held the Pioneers without a basket down the stretch and ultimately tied the game. Wilson was fouled on a 3-point attempt and hit all three free throws to start the run. He followed with a jumper to make it 84-76 and Hammonds made a layup to close the margin to 84-78. Means then hit a 3-pointer with 1:13 to go and Hammonds followed with his game-tying 3-pointer with 28 seconds remaining.
Cal State LA will now be off until a Thursday, Dec. 29 meeting at UC San Diego.
