CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team unleashed a tremendous rally against No. 13 California Baptist, but ultimately found an early deficit too much to overcome.
The Golden Eagles sliced a 26-point deficit in the second quarter down to seven points early in the fourth quarter, but fell short at the end of an 81-70 loss to the Lancers Saturday in the CCAA/PacWest Thanksgiving Challenge. Cal State LA (3-3), which beat Point Loma on Friday, finished the tournament with a split. California Baptist (7-2) won both its games.
Cal State LA had its three-game winning streak snapped, but certainly showed plenty of resolve while throwing a major scare into the Lancers.
Rikke Fabricius had 20 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Da'Jah Jackson had 10 points.
Mackenzie Barnes had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Lexy Ram had 21 points to lead three Lancers in double figures. Cassidy Mihalko had 15 points and nine rebounds and Teri Mitchell had 13 points.
Christine Delapina had seven points, three assists and two steals, while
Marina LaPuzza had six points and six rebounds.
Cal State LA scored the first basket of the game on a layup by
Rachael DiRegolo, but California Baptist scored the next 13 points before a steal by Delapina that led to a layup by Barnes stopped the run.
The Golden Eagles trailed by 26 points twice, the final time at 45-19 with 3:43 left in the second period. Baskets by Fabricius and
Sacha Griffin, a steal and two free throws by Delapina and a basket by Fabricius paced a quick 8-0 run. A basket by Barnes made it 47-31 at halftime.
Cal State LA trailed by 17 points early in the third quarter before a 3-pointer by Jackson and two free throws each by Fabricius and Jackson quickly made it 52-42. A 3-pointer by Jackson brought the Golden Eagles to within eight points at 62-54 near the end of the third quarter, but California Baptist took a 65-54 advantage into the final period.
Cal State LA quickly closed to within seven points, after a layup by Jackson with 6:22 to go and a free throw by Fabricius kept the margin at seven points at 77-70 with 4:04 to go, but Cal State LA was blanked the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home conference opener against Humboldt State at 5:30 p.m.
