CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team made some big plays down the stretch and ran its winning streak to three games.
Mackenzie Barnes hit a pair of tie-breaking free throws with 54 seconds left and the Golden Eagles went on to a 48-44 victory over the Sea Lions Friday in the CCAA/PacWest Thanksgiving Challenge at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal State LA (3-2) has won all three of its games since returning from its season-opening Alaska trip and handed Point Loma (4-1) its first loss of the season.
Cal State LA trailed by as many as eight points in the first half, but scored the last eight points of the second quarter to tie the game by halftime and the second half was a tight battle to the finish.
Christine Delapina hit a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 35-33 lead after three quarters and hit another early in the fourth to push the lead to 38-33. Cal State LA never trailed again, although the game was tied three times down the stretch.
Rikke Fabricius had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Delapina finished with 10 points, four rebounds and four steals.
Da'Jah Jackson had eight points and four rebounds.
Kassidy Gengenbach had 12 points to lead three Point Loma players in double figures. Alex Brunk had 11 points and Roya Rustamzada had 10 points.
Cal State LA shot just 31.4 percent (16-of-51), but limited Point Loma to just 27.3 percent (18-of-66) shooting. The Golden Eagles were 4-of-14 from 3-point range, while Point Loma was 4-of-22. Cal State LA was an efficient 12-of-14 from the free-throw line, while Point Loma was 4-of-7.
Cal State LA had a 44-43 rebounding edge and committed 20 turnovers to 15 for Point Loma.
Alma Serna, in her first basketball game of the year following the end of the volleyball season, had seven rebounds and five blocks to go along with four points.
Marina LaPuzza had a team-high eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA trailed early, falling behind 14-7 after one quarter and 20-12 with just more than two minutes remaining in the half. Serna, though, made a layup and Jackson and
Samantha Lee hit 3-pointers to tie the game at 20-20 at halftime.
Delapina hit a go-ahead 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 35-33 lead at the end of the third quarter and she opened the fourth quarter with another 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 38-33 advantage with nine minutes to go. A layup by Fabricius kept the lead at 40-35 with eight minutes remaining, but Point Loma scored the next five points to tie it. A layup by Fabricius put the Golden Eagles ahead, 42-40, with 2:24 to go and a layup by Serna made it 44-42 with 1:35 remaining. After Point Loma tied it again with 1:22 to go, Barnes hit two big free throws with 54 seconds remaining to give Cal State LA the lead for good. After Delapina grabbed a defensive rebound, Lee was fouled with five seconds to go and hit both free throws to put the game away.
Cal State LA will return to tournament action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against California Baptist.
