Golden Eagles Give A Scare To No. 12 Seawolves

ANCHORAGE, AK -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team gave No. 12 Alaska Anchorage all it could handle in the final game of the 2016 Seawolf Jamboree.

The Golden Eagles erased a 13-point first-half deficit and had a potential game-tying 3-pointer miss with five seconds remaining of a 73-68 loss to the host Seawolves Saturday in Alaska Airlines Court. Cal State LA (2-2) took its last lead with three minutes remaining, but Alaska Anchorage (4-2) scored the next six points and hung on at the end.

Travis Hammonds had 13 points and five rebounds and Jordan Wilson had 13 points and six assists for the Golden Eagles. DeSean Scott and freshman Garrett Carter had 10 points each.

Sekou Wiggs had a game-high 27 points for Alaska Anchorage, including three straight 3-pointers late in the game that pushed the Seawolves ahead. Corey Hammell had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Connor Devine had 12 points and six rebounds.

Jonathan Davis had eight points and five rebounds and Miles Ford had seven points for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 42.9 percent for the game (24-of-56), while Alaska Anchorage shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56). The Golden Eagles were 11-of-25 from 3-point range, including 7-of-13 in the first half, while the Seawolves were 8-of-19. Cal State LA was 9-of-13 from the free-throw line, while Alaska Anchorage was 19-of-26.

Alaska Anchorage had a 38-28 rebounding edge, but Cal State LA forced 19 turnovers while committing 16.

Ford opened the scoring in the game with a layup, but Alaska Anchorage rolled off the next 12 points to take its first double-digit lead. A 3-pointer by Scott stopped that run, but the Seawolves took a 20-7 lead before a basket by Daylin Billingsley stopped that surge. Cal State LA still trailed, 35-23, with five minutes to go in the half before a layup by Davis and a rare four-point play by Wilson quickly made it 35-29. Wilson and Carter hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Golden Eagles to within 37-35 and a jumper by Ford made it 41-39 at halftime.

A 3-pointer by Ford put the Golden Eagles ahead for the first time in the second half, 44-43, and two free throws by Ford stretched the lead to 46-43. A Hammonds layup gave Cal State LA a 48-46 lead and a layup by Scott and free throw by Billingsley put the Golden Eagles ahead, 51-50.

After Alaska Anchorage opened up a 62-55 lead with just under seven minutes left, Carter hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 62-61. Wiggs hit the first of his three clutch 3-pointers to make it 65-61, but two free throws by Scott and a 3-pointer by Scott gave the Golden Eagles their final lead at 66-65 with 3:13 to go.

Wiggs, though, hit consecutive 3-pointers for the Seawolves to give them the lead for good. A dunk by Davis pulled the Golden Eagles to within 71-68 with 1:06 left and Hammonds rebounded a miss with 35 seconds left. After a timeout with 19 seconds remaining, Cal State LA got a 3-point attempt with five seconds to go. A pair of Alaska Anchorage free throws with two seconds left accounted for the final margin.

Hammonds and Wilson joined Brandon Davis of Alaska Fairbanks, Devine and Hammell of Alaska Anchorage and tourney Most Outstanding Player Wiggs on the 2016 Seawolf Jamboree All-Tournament Team.

Cal State LA will complete its trip to Alaska with a game at Alaska Fairbanks on Monday at 8 p.m.
