Golden Eagles Pick Up Second Straight Win

IRVINE -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team held on for its second straight win since returning back to Southern California.

After opening the season with a pair of games in Alaska, the Golden Eagles followed up Tuesday's win over Azusa Pacific with a 73-68 victory over Concordia Friday night in Irvine. Cal State LA (2-2) built leads as large as 22 points and then held off a late surge by the Eagles (0-3).

Rikke Fabricius led the Golden Eagles with a game-high 18 points, while Rachael DiRegolo had 11 points and seven rebounds, while Da'Jah Jackson had 11 points, three assists and three steals.

Zoe Scott-Goss and Gabby Johnson had 13 points each for Concordia.

Mackenzie Barnes had nine points, Karina Moreno had eight points and Christine Delapina had seven points, five rebounds and seven assists.

Cal State LA shot 50 percent for the game (25-of-50), while Concordia shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56). The Golden Eagles were 4-of-17 from 3-point range, while Concordia was 3-of-16. Cal State LA was 19-of-27 from the free-throw line and Concordia was 19-of-30. Cal State LA had a 37-31 rebounding edge and committed 20 turnovers to 16 for the Eagles.

The Golden Eagles took the lead for good in the first quarter and never looked back. After trailing 13-11, the Golden Eagles took the lead on a free throw by Fabricius, a basket by DiRegolo and two free throws by Delapina that made it 16-13. A Fabricius layup made it 18-15 and a steal and layup by Jackson and a layup by Moreno made it 22-15 after one quarter.

A 3-pointer by Jackson gave the Golden Eagles a 25-15 lead and they settled for a 32-26 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run to open up a 43-26 lead. DeRegolo started the run with a basket and Marina LaPuzza scored on an offensive rebound and then hit a 3-pointer to make it 39-26. Layups by Delapina and Jackson stretched the lead to 43-26. A 3-pointer by Fabricius and two free throws by Delapina made it 53-34 after three quarters.

The Golden Eagles took their biggest lead, 63-41, after a basket by Barnes with six minutes to play. Another basket by Barnes kept the margin at 20 points, 65-45, with 3:58 to go. Concordia then scored the next 14 points to close to within 65-59. A free throw by DiRegolo stopped the run and Moreno hit a free throw to make it 67-60. Moreno hit two more free throws to make it 69-61 with 29 seconds to go and a free throw by Jackson made it 70-67. A free throw by Moreno and two free throws by Samantha Lee accounted for the final score.

Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a game against Point Loma at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
