Golden Eagles Can't Get Going Against Warriors

LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's volleyball team never could get itself untracked Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest against Stanislaus State.

The Golden Eagles had no answers for a powerful performance from the Warriors and fell in three sets, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 in University Gym. Cal State LA (15-9, 11-5 CCAA) lost its second straight home game and was swept at home for the first time this season.

Stanislaus State (12-14, 9-8 CCAA) won its second straight match against a CCAA South Division team and recorded its second straight sweep. The Warriors swept UC San Diego last Saturday in Turlock.

Both teams will be playing next week in the CCAA Championship Tournament in San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles, though, will certainly want to get things back on track before next week.

JamieAnn Bero had nine kills, while Taylor Kushner had six kills and two blocks. Alma Serna also had six kills and two blocks.

Stanislaus State got 10 kills and seven digs from Blair Ehrlich and nine kills in just 13 swings from Lindsay Skadeland.

Daisy Portillo had five kills for the Golden Eagles, while Kelsey Molnar had 25 set assists and one ace.

Stanislaus State had a 45-33 edge in kills and hit at a .306 clip to just .265 for the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles had a 3-2 advantage in blocks. Cal State LA struggled at the service line, recording three aces and eight errors to six aces and five errors for the Warriors.

Cal State LA opened up a 16-10 lead in the opening set after a kill by Lauren Gomez, but things quickly got away from the Golden Eagles after that. Stanislaus State rallied to tie the set at 18-18 and, after Cal State LA took its last lead at 19-18 following a Bero kill, the Warriors rattled off six straight points to get to set point. A kill by Skadeland ended the set.

Cal State LA rallied from an 8-2 deficit in the second set  and tied it at 9-9 after an ace by Nicole Efseaff and took a 12-10 lead after a block by Kushner and Serna. A kill by Bero tied it for a final time at 16-16, but Stanislaus State scored the next three points and never looked back.

Stanislaus State never trailed in the final set and opened up a 19-10 lead. Cal State LA never got within three points after that.

Cal State LA will conclude the regular season with a home match against Chico State on Saturday. The Golden Eagles will honor their four seniors – JamieAnn Bero, Chloe Clancy, Lauren Gomez and Taylor Kushner – in pregame ceremonies.
